The gourd has had the top cut off and levelled, and now the two holes for the dowelstick are visible. Instead of fashioning the dowelstick so that it is angled to achieve the best neck angle for the banjo, it is easier to make the dowelstick parallel to the neck and then adjust the angle by cutting the hole near the tailpiece higher than the hole near the neck. This view has the neck heel hole in the foreground.
